Processing–Structure Paradigm era

H. Jones [1] was active at University of Geneva [3] and Colorado State University [4] during the Processing–Structure Paradigm era (1952–1974). His 1969 paper Observations on a structural transition in aluminium alloys hardened by rapid solidification [7] demonstrated how rapid solidification can induce distinct structural transitions, highlighting processing controls on microstructure that defined the era. G. C. Wood [2] carried out foundational high-temperature oxidation work at University of Manchester [5] and Institute of Science and Technology [6], culminating in The oxidation of iron-chromium alloys and stainless steels at high temperatures [8]. Together, these efforts anchored the Processing–Structure Paradigm by linking processing routes to oxidation and microstructural stability and informing predictive alloy design in this era.

Microstructure-Driven Reliability era

Ulrike Diebold[1], associated with Princeton University[3] and the University of California, Riverside[4], emerges as a central figure in microstructure-driven reliability during 1975–2008. Her contributions in this era include advancing the surface science of metal oxides through the 1995 work The surface science of metal oxides[7], elucidating surface chemistry, segregation phenomena, and oxide stability that underpin environmental and mechanical degradation at interfaces, thereby informing reliability assessments of microstructure-controlled materials. F. Barlat[2], associated with Pohang University of Science and Technology[5] and Seoul National University[6], stands out in this era.
